The Trade Mark Process

Registered Trade Marks identify the origin of goods or services and can be used to protect brand names, logos, words and indeed any symbol which can be considered distinctive for the goods or services in respect of which the mark is to be used. Although the protection of Trade Marks may seem a simple task, it can be very complex.

In order to obtain a Registered Trade Mark, a Trade Mark application is filed in the relevant country or in respect of the relevant region in which Trade Mark protection is desired. The Trade Mark Registry of the relevant country undertakes an examination of the Trade Mark Application and, once the Application meets the legal requirements for the country, the Trade Mark is registered.

Trade Mark protection lasts for as long as the Trade Mark is maintained by the payment of renewal fees.
